We envision a world where every wartime ally is honored for their brave service and where they and their families find safety and opportunity.
Who We Are
No One Left Behind is the only nation-wide association of wartime allies in the US supported by an alliance of individual veterans, civilians, and other partner organizations. Together we share a common mission and vision.
We are dedicated to ensuring that America keeps its promise to our wartime allies from Iraq and Afghanistan. These brave men and women served as interpreters and in other support roles right alongside US military and government personnel, in many cases directly saving American lives. This choice resulted in not only great risk to their own lives but in many cases, this danger was extended to their families as well.
Our vision is to see that each wartime ally is honored for their courageous service and that they and their family members find safety and opportunity. This includes supporting those who are qualified and seek to obtain a Special Immigrant Visa to the United States. There are still tens of thousands of wartime allies and their family members who remain in harm’s way. These men, women, and children wait on average between 2-3 years for their Visa application to be processed and hopefully approved. Along with other valued partners, we assist them through this process (what we call ‘Operation Lost In Translation’). According to Pew Research and the State Department, nearly 75,000 Special Immigrant Visa recipients have resettled all across America since 2008. For these, we work with other partners in refugee resettlement to help them establish new lives in America.
We do all of this while staying true to our core values of empowerment, partnership, honor, integrity, diversity, and results. We stand together, Shona ba Shona, Kataf Lakataf, Shoulder to Shoulder, in pursuing this noble cause.
Our Core Values
Empowerment Honorary veterans and their families are irreplaceable leaders in the NOLB cause. We prioritize programs that help families become self-sufficient.
Partnership We respect individuals and organizations whose work intersects with ours. We do not duplicate programs where other organizations are already effectively and sufficiently delivering services. We partner with all who seek to help our cause.
Honor We seek to regularly honor our members as they serve the community. We are deeply grateful and recognize all who have served our cause.
Integrity We are ruthlessly honest. We will always say what we can do, what we can’t do, and what we hope to do. We take every measure to ensure that our organization and finances are handled ethically and transparently. We safeguard the confidentiality of our members.
Inclusivity Our cause represents common ground. Though our members come from radically different backgrounds (ethnic, religions, political, etc.), we are united by our mission and welcome all who support it. All members are treated without prejudice when requesting assistance.
Results We are driven by one purpose – to accomplish the mission. We value action and hold ourselves to the highest standards.
“I’m alive today because of my translator”
Matt Zeller should have died on April 28, 2008. Instead, he was able to return to his family and beautiful baby girl because his Afghan interpreter, Janis Shinwari, killed two Taliban fighters who were about to shoot him.
Janis faithfully served America in Afghanistan for 8 years and saved countless American lives. Despite promises the U.S. Military made to every local interpreter supporting our operations in Iraq and Afghanistan, it took Matt more than 3 years to get Janis and his family away from the Taliban fighters hunting them.
In November 2013, Janis and Matt started No One Left Behind with one mission: to ensure America treats our interpreters as the heroes and veterans they are. We continue to fight for and support our wartime allies’ and keep America’s promise.
