Meet our team
Fred Wellman is CEO and provides senior level corporate social responsibility, public relations, philanthropic strategy; veterans and military family issues counsel to ScoutComms clients. ScoutComms, Inc. is a Certified B Corporation and the nation’s premier communications, advocacy and philanthropic strategy firm focused entirely on supporting veterans, military families and the organizations that empower them.
Wellman is the ‘Scout’ in ScoutComms as he spent much of his 22-year military career as an Army Aeroscout pilot. Over four combat tours Wellman served in multiple capacities in aviation and public affairs most notably as the Chief of Public Affairs and official spokesman for General (retired) David Petraeus, and recently retired Chairman of the Joint Chiefs General Martin Dempsey with Multi-National Security Transition Command-Iraq. He is qualified as an Army Ranger and Senior Aviator.
Wellman founded ScoutComms in November 2010 upon recognizing the lack of military veterans in the public relations agency sector. His professional clients have included and include the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation ‘Hiring Our Heroes’, Wounded Warrior Project, The Home Depot Foundation, GE, the Institute for Veterans and Military Families at Syracuse University, The Elizabeth Dole Foundation, Semper Fi Fund, BP America, Prudential, and many others.
Wellman holds a Bachelor’s of Science in International Relations from the United States Military Academy at West Point. He graduated from the Harvard Kennedy School of Government as a Presidential Scholar/Public Service Fellow and Center for Public Leadership Fellow graduating with a Masters of Public Administration with honors as a Lucius N. Littauer Fellow for outstanding academic achievement, public service and future leadership potential.
Under Fred’s leadership ScoutComms has won two coveted Public Relations Society of America Silver Anvil awards, the top awards in the PR industry. The Stafford County Virginia Economic Development Authority named him the 2013 ‘Entrepreneur of the Year’ and ScoutComms the ‘Best Place to Work’ for businesses under 25 employees. Wellman and ScoutComms were selected as one of the HillVets 100 list of most influential veterans and organizations. He was named the Virginia Veterans Business Champion of the Year for 2014 by the U.S. Small Business Administration-Richmond and was recently named the Veteran Owned Business of the Year by the University of Mary Washington Small Business Development Center for 2015 and ScoutComms is the Fredericksburg Regional Chamber of Commerce Military Affairs Council ‘Military Friendly Business of the Year’ for 2015.
Wellman supports a number of veteran oriented causes. He served as the first Community Outreach Director for Team Red, White & Blue Fredericksburg and Vice Chairman of the Fredericksburg Area Veterans Council. He is a member of the University of Mary Washington Center for Economic Development’s Veteran Owned Business Executive Roundtable. He sits on the Washington D.C. Advisory Board to U.S. Vets, Inc., the American Legion’s Small Business Task Force, HillVets Advisory Board and the Board of Directors for The Rosie Network. He is also the ‘Entrepreneur in Residence’ for the National Military Spouse Network.
