A Veteran’s Fight

We posted this article on our Facebook and Twitter accounts a few days ago. We have since received more information on Muhammad’s case and wanted to post a follow-up.

Kristy Perano’s family has been working tirelessly for the past 9 months to get Muhammad Kamran, an Afghan interpreter that worked with the U.S. military for 10 years, and his family safely in America.

Kristy gave us an in-depth look at the tedious and ambiguous process Muhammad, his family, and veterans vouching for Muhammad, like Karsten Daponte who wrote a letter of support for Muhammad, have been going through. Currently, Muhammad and his family have been denied visas to the United States, a move that forces them to continue living in hiding, fearful for their lives, after the heroic work Muhammad did for and with American troops.

Kristy Perano on the background and current status of Muhammad’s case:

“The case was denied by USCIS two days after they acknowledged that they were working on it and without giving the lawyer or anyone else involved any chance for feedback.”

Perano continued, “The lawyer appealed to the director of the Humanitarian Affairs Branch of USCIS, John Bird, and asked him to review the cases personally. He eventually did review the cases but is now making the preposterous claim that the “refugee experts” he consulted said that even Muhammad’s 2- and 4-year-old daughters are a threat to national security. So he refused to even save the children by allowing them to live with their aunt and uncle in Georgia. It is not even possible, let alone reasonable that Muhammad’s 2-year-old daughter is a terrorist. And USCIS did not seem to value Karsten’s letter of strong support to Muhammad receiving humanitarian parole, based on his interaction with Muhammad. Nor did they take Karsten up on his offer to share with them in more detail his positive impressions of Muhammad and why he feels Muhammad would be a great addition to our society.”

It is our mission to keep America’s promise to our heroic veterans like Muhammad. We are fighting tirelessly until we accomplish our mission and keep our country’s promise to its veterans and wartime allies. From all of us at No One Left Behind, thank you all for standing Shona ba Shona, Shoulder to Shoulder, with us and our wartime allies.
