This weekend – as we remember those who fought and died in service to our country – America risks breaking our promise to wartime allies who desperately need our help. Special Immigrant Visa (SIV) arrivals overall in the first half of this year have declined by 28 percent compared to the same time period last year, according to International Rescue Committee data for fiscal year 2017 and 2018.
I fear that the current situation is causing us to fall short on America’s promise to SIV families in Iraq and Afghanistan, who face real danger in their native countries because of their service to the United States.
We need to build support for the continued admission of SIV families to the United States. If we break our promise to these loyal men and women we are not only breaking our word but making the situation on the ground more difficult for American troops now and in future conflicts.
Through four targeted operations we bridge the gap between current State Department and NGO refugee relief programs.
These programs include:
- Operation Medic, NOLB’s newest mission, assists our wartime allies with medical and mental health treatment as well as legal assistance for obtaining battlefield injury compensation.
- Operation Lost in Translation assists American veterans in their efforts to help their wartime allies obtain Special Immigrant Visas (SIVs).
- Operation Got Your Back assists SIV holders and their dependents with employment, English language classes and cultural adaptation.
- Operation Welcome Home provides newly arrived wartime allies with funding and assistance related to basic resettlement necessities, such as housing, home furnishings, food, transportation and incidentals.
Our mission continues until all of our allies are safely out of harm’s way and free to pursue the American dream, just like Abdul and his daughter. Through all of your contributions, we have helped more than 5,200 people come to America and build a new life away from fear, repression and the threat of harm.
Your continued support of No One Left Behind allows us to offer mission critical support to SIVs and their families. Thank you for partnering with us to keep America’s promise to our wartime allies. Your support is what keeps our operations going. All of us at No One Left Behind join you in honoring the sacrifices of our heroes this Memorial Day.
